During the Fall 2020 semester, Fairleigh Dickinson University’s pre-law program partnered with the law firm Schenck, Price, Smith & King (SPS&K) to offer a legal externship for students interested in learning more about careers in the legal field. In the externship’s inaugural semester, four FDU students were given the rare opportunity to learn the ins and outs of working at a mid-size law firm in New Jersey by observing SPS&K attorneys in their element.
I was lucky enough to be one of these students along with my friends and classmates Kesha Patel, Taylor Bellardino, and Jennifer Radke. Over the course of the semester, we were able to sit in on depositions, arbitrations, and client meetings. Kesha and Taylor were even given the special privilege of ruining their heels at a construction site inspection in Newark, New Jersey.
I cannot thank Professor Peabody and Professor Ferrans along with the team at SPS&K enough for making this externship happen. Through my experiences at SPS&K and the supplementary class work completed for Professors Peabody and Ferrans, my understanding of careers in the legal field has been expanded exponentially.
Getting a chance to speak with practicing attorneys about their career paths and the experiences they attribute their successes to has allowed me to consider my own future and what I can do in the present to achieve my goals.
