What does it mean to be Pre-law?A Pre-law student at FDU is anyone who thinks (or knows!) they want to go to law school and other students interested in learning more about law as an undergraduate. Our Pre-law program consists of regular events (like Lunch and Law and Law Week), student clubs (like Mock Trial and the Law and Politics club), advising by faculty (especially Prof. Madelyn Ferrans, Director of Pre-law, and Prof. Bruce Peabody), relevant courses, and a Pre-law Minor and a Legal Studies concentration in our Government and Politics Major (BA). For more information, read up on the pre-law program at FDU here: Pre-law at FDU

I'm thinking about law school, but I'm feeling overwhelmed. How do I get started?"Don't worry! We'll help you! First of all, you are in the right place. Reviewing the resources on this website is a good place to start. Second, take some time to educate yourself about the basics of the law school applicaiton process. Using our Law School Timetable is a good way to learn about the different steps needed to apply and how you might organize your time to complete these steps. Third, schedule an appointment to see one of our prelaw advisors, Prof. Madelyn Ferrans or Prof. Bruce Peabody.

What major should I pick if I want to go to law school? There's no specific major you need to pick. People go to law school after graduating with majors in Government and Politics, Criminology, History, Theater, Biology, Communications, English and many others. Select a major that you enjoy and find interesting, because that's the major you will probably do well at (and law schools do care about your grades)! That said, if you are really interested in learning about chemistry or being a journalist, you might want to think through why you want to go to law school. It's also a good idea to expose yourself to some of our (many) classes that look at legal issues and topics -- just to get you ready for "thinking like a lawyer" and to make sure the material interests you.
